Product details
This DIY solder project turns the Boston subway map into a live LED display. An ESP32 connects to Wi-Fi, downloads current vehicle data from the MBTA V3 API, and lights the LEDs for the stations where trains are stopped or currently headed. Solid LED indicates a train is stopped at that station. Blinking LED a train is incoming or traveling toward that station. This kit is lots of fun to build and will let you keep track of the Red, Green, Blue, and Orange lines at a glance.
This kit includes the main PCB, ESP32 microcontroller, LEDs including some spares, and other miscellaneous parts needed to complete the build. LEDs on this board are driven by 3x HT16K33 surface mount diver chips. Due to the difficulty involved with surface mount soldering, the 3x HT16K33s are pre-soldered on to the main PCB. The components are installed on both the front and back of the PCB giving a clean look highlighting the location of all trains on the system.
This kit includes hundreds of LEDs and is intended for a builder with intermediate or expert soldering experience. If you are new to soldering, check my other listings for a some simpler kits that may be better for starting out.
Includes detailed instructions on how to assemble the kit as well as upload the required software to the included esp32 microcontroller. You'll need a PC with USB in order to upload the software to the esp32
This kit requires a 5v DC power supply which is not included which can either be connected via the 5.5mm*2.5mm barrel jack or connect wires to the included screw terminals.
Warning - Do not connect both USB and 5v power supply at the same time! Only connect a +5v power supply, not other voltages. + must be connected to + and - must be connected to -
If you need a power supply, just search ebay or amazon for "5.5mm*2.5mm 5v power supply". Please message me if you are unsure what you need.
